How to Measure Square Footage

Measure square footage for rectangles and irregular spaces, including L-shapes, with worked examples.

Square footage drives flooring, tile, paint and many other estimates. For a simple rectangle it takes one multiplication.

Rectangles

Multiply length by width. A room 12 feet by 10 feet is 120 square feet. In metric, multiply the two sides in metres for square metres.

L-shaped and irregular rooms

Split the space into rectangles, work out each area, and add them together. A room shaped like an L becomes two rectangles. This method handles almost any layout made of straight walls.

Circles and triangles

For a circle, area is pi times the radius squared. For a triangle, it is half the base times the height. Add these to your rectangle total for spaces with curved or angled sections.

Common questions

How do I find the area of an L-shaped room?

Divide it into two rectangles, calculate each area, then add them.

Should I round measurements up?

Round up slightly so you are never short, especially before buying flooring or tile by the box.
