How the fertilizer estimate works

Lawn fertilizer is dosed by nitrogen. Pick a target nitrogen rate, often about 1 pound of nitrogen per 1000 square feet per feeding, then divide by the nitrogen fraction of your product, which is the first number in the N P K figures on the bag. A 20 percent nitrogen product needs five times its nitrogen weight in product. Do not exceed the label rate.

Common questions

How much fertilizer for 1000 square feet?

To apply 1 pound of nitrogen with a 20 percent nitrogen product, you need 5 pounds of product per 1000 square feet.

What does the N percentage mean?

It is the first number in the N P K figures on the bag, the share of the product that is nitrogen. Lower nitrogen means you apply more product for the same nitrogen rate.
